c.1941 Marx, Flippo the Jumping Dog in Original Box
Classic embossed tin litho somersaulting Flippo the Jumping Dog complete with original box and key. The toy and box were available in at least two versions over its 10 year history. Early versions spelled the name of the toy with one "p". The example in this auction is a "cross-over" piece consisting of the early toy, but a later box. A photo of the version 1 box is shown below. Great looking furry black and white pup with studded red collar and cape. "Flipo" (spelled with one "p") lithoed onto the cape. Arms swing freely. Strong clockwork motor releases tension intermittently causing the legs to push down rapidly (clockwise). This causes Flipo to flip over backwards. Rarely does he land on his feet which accounts for his typical head scuffs and scratches. Operated using start/stop switch located above the tail. Original black on white printed box shows cartoon-like drawings of Flippo in action (spelled with two "p"). Cover shows Flippo in a partial backflip with the word Wheeee spelled out above him. Side panels show a head portrait of Flippo winking and smiling. Includes post-1939 Marx logo. Earlier Marx logo was printed on the version 1 box. Size: 4" long, 3½" tall. Sold: Jul. 2006
